Queeribbean Crossings: Confronting Gendered and Racialized Violence

Friday, December 9, 2022, from 9 am - 4 pm at Medgar Evers College- 1638 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11225

In recognition of 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence and Human Rights Day, join Caribbean Equality Project for "Queeribbean Crossings: Confronting Gendered and Racialized Violence" at Medgar Evers College in Little Caribbean, Brooklyn.

Queeribbean Crossings is a community-centered conference fostering conversation surrounding queer and trans Caribbean histories and contemporary lived realities of marginalization, struggle, resistance, and liberation. In particular, we think about the multi-layered flows, mobilities, and crossings of queer Caribbeanness across time, space, and history that cultivate what we now understand as the queer and trans Caribbean diaspora. Thinking through the anti-colonial, feminist, intersectional, and intergenerational lessons of the queer and trans Caribbean provides essential ongoing tools for building more equitable, safe, and generative Caribbean futures. Queeribbean Crossings will center the intersections of cross-racial solidarity and intimate partner violence on themes of liberation, social justice, immigration, trans equity, decriminalization, mental health, HIV care, and other pertinent issues impacting Black, Asian, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ Caribbean communities.

In collaboratively reflecting on what care can look and feel like amidst multiple and colliding pandemics, queer and trans Caribbean artists, activists, and organizers across multiple geographies are brought into conversation to unpack our collective commitments to cross-racial solidarities. Exacerbated by issues of state surveillance, emerging housing crisis, food insecurities, and police violence that escalated during COVID-19, queer and trans communities of color have specifically been left vulnerable to harm, danger, and isolation made possible through intersecting forms of violence. In times of deep crisis, interracial solidarity is necessary more than ever, particularly as queer of color communities had to develop new ways of fostering community, resilience, and kinship when a physical connection was impossible. In this workshop, our diverse panelists will present ideas, resolutions, and ongoing questions required of us to further work towards achieving the goal of solidarity as we move into a post-COVID present. We particularly focus on networks of connection, allyship, and solidarity produced across Asian, Black-Asian, and Afro - and Indo-Caribbean communities as a means to grapple with our contemporary political visions and goals for the future.
