Queeribbean Crossings: Confronting Gendered and Racialized Violence

Friday, December 9, 2022, from 9 am - 4 pm at Medgar Evers College- 1638 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11225

In recognition of 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence and Human Rights Day, join Caribbean Equality Project for "Queeribbean Crossings: Confronting Gendered and Racialized Violence" at Medgar Evers College in Little Caribbean, Brooklyn.

Queeribbean Crossings is a community-centered conference fostering conversation surrounding queer and trans Caribbean histories and contemporary lived realities of marginalization, struggle, resistance, and liberation. In particular, we think about the multi-layered flows, mobilities, and crossings of queer Caribbeanness across time, space, and history that cultivate what we now understand as the queer and trans Caribbean diaspora. Thinking through the anti-colonial, feminist, intersectional, and intergenerational lessons of the queer and trans Caribbean provides essential ongoing tools for building more equitable, safe, and generative Caribbean futures. Queeribbean Crossings will center the intersections of cross-racial solidarity and intimate partner violence on themes of liberation, social justice, immigration, trans equity, decriminalization, mental health, HIV care, and other pertinent issues impacting Black, Asian, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ Caribbean communities.

Following in line with honoring the feminist and anti-colonial commitments of “Human Rights Day,” this panel explores emerging questions, debates, and ongoing issues in discussions of transnational gender-based and intimate partner violence in the Caribbean and Caribbean diaspora. Moving across histories of Indigenous genocide, to the transatlantic slave trade, to indentured labor, and emerging post-colonial acts of misogyny and transphobia, queer and trans artists and organizers will discuss the afterlife of colonial gendered violence and how such resurgences of pain are being mobilized to enact regimes of harm, particularly among marginalized communities. How can queer and trans Caribbean communities mobilize to work against the layered effects of transnational gendered violence that collaboratively produce acts of violence across experiences of race, class, and sexuality? This workshop seeks to begin answering this question by turning to a critical conversation and enactments of culture produced within the queer Caribbean diaspora in NYC.

This panel will feature a screening of a short film entitled Gyal (2022) by Ryan Persadie, followed by a critical discussion among panelists that brings Black, Latinx, Afro - and Indo-Caribbean queer and trans narratives of gendered violence in conversation with each other to grapple with commitments towards collective community-driven solutions and healing.
