Our Story

  • Our Mission

Caribbean Equality Project is a Caribbean LGBTQ+ immigrant rights organization in NYC. The organization advocates for and represents Afro and Indo-Caribbean LGBTQ+ people through culturally responsive community organizing, public education, healing, civic engagement, racial justice, health & gender equity, legislative advocacy, immigration, and ending hate violence in the Caribbean diaspora.

  • Our History

Caribbean Equality Project, founded in 2015 in response to anti-LGBTQ violence in Richmond Hill, Queens, has been actively supporting the community. It hosts bi-monthly Unchained support groups in Queens and Brooklyn, offers immigration legal services for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers, and organizes art exhibitions. The project also addresses food insecurity and fosters civic engagement through programs focused on voting rights and legislative advocacy in New York State.

Community in Action

  • Queeribbean Crossings Conference

On Thursday, December 5, in recognition of 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence and Human Rights Day, the Caribbean Equality Project will host its 3rd annual "Queeribbean Crossings" conference, themed "Solidarity as Resistance," in partnership with the CUNY LGBTQIA+ Consortium at Queens College, CUNY. • Emergency Relief Fund

At the heart of everything we do is profound compassion for our community members who face daily threats to their safety and well-being. The Caribbean Equality Project (CEP) stands as a beacon of hope for Afro- and Indo-Caribbean LGBTQ+ immigrants and asylum seekers in New York City. Despite unprecedented challenges, we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing essential support and resources. Please donate to our LGBTQ+ Emergency Relief Fund here.

  • Meet Our New Board

In 2023, Caribbean Equality Project embarked on a year-long infrastructure development, which included updating the organization’s ByLaws and Certificate of Incorporation and expanding our board to facilitate a Co-Chair structure- all made possible with the support of our partners at the New York Foundation and Lawyers Alliance for New York. Earlier this year, we launched a public search to expand our board from 9 to 12 members. Over the past 6 months, our Board Search Committee interviewed qualified candidates to fill 5 board positions.
